Storytelling made me who I AM!!!

I have witnessed the power of storytelling in my own life. Storytelling didn't change my life. It MADE my life! Storytelling gave me a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose and most importantly it gave me a sense of self.

Let me tell you a bit about my story…….

I grew up in a small village, Katima Mulilo, Namibia. I lived with my great grandma (we called her MAMA), In a mudhouse. No running water. No electricity. Yet, I lived life beyond my circumstance.

My mother worked in the City, she could only come ever so often, and everytime she would come home she would bring me a story book or a magazine.
I lived in those pages.
I saw the world before the world could see me.

Mama, was the story weaver and narrator. Every night before bed, I would either be a Lion, a crocodile, a mouse, or a mystic creator that lived in the heavens.
Those stories taught me that I was more than anything in this world. That I Could expand. More so, they taught me that regardless of what I was; a lion or a mouse, I had an important role to play in the crevasse of this life.

The greatest story that my grandmother, mother and father ever told me, was the story of who I was.

I have travelled to places that I only saw in my mothers magazines. Finally, the world met me.
I have spoken and socialised with people who turned out to be crocodiles and some into mystic creatures that guided me on my journey. In the most difficult of situations, I remembered who I was and what I was made of.

“I am Sibongile Tshabalala, of the Mshengu clan, from the mountains of Mhlongamvula.
God Himself holds my being.
I am of royal bloodline, of mighty warriors and wind riders.
I am made of sun kissed sand and scorched skin.
I hold the 7 stars in one hand, as the other catches the falling waters.
I hold the universe in my belly.
I am a child of my family.
A prophet to my people.
A queen of my lineage.
I must always remember who I am: I am Sibongile Tshabalala."
